“DEXTER, YOU cowardly little shit.” I scan the parking lot in front of Dex’s town house. I’ve been sitting in my car for over an hour, but his beat-up old truck is still nowhere to be found. My grand plan to catch him at home before practice to discuss what happened yesterday is squashed by a devious Dexter Savage.

Wherever he went, he must be going straight to practice afterward, because it’s too late for him to show up here and still make it in time. With a sigh I back the car out and head for the beach. Apparently whatever needs to be said is going to happen in a very public place. Wonderful.

The sand is packed for a random Friday morning. But then, this is SoCal, and nobody loves the outdoors like we do. I approach the courts and scan the area for any trace of Dex. When I finally spot him, he’s laughing and joking with some woman as if today is the same as any other day and he didn’t throw my entire world off its axis yesterday.

Coach Archer shouts for us to join him on the court, but I don’t hear a word he says. My feet are stuck in the sand as though a vat of glue is holding me in place. I watch, dumbstruck, as Dex leans down and kisses the woman passionately, right on the lips.
